West Texas Inspirations

After a crazy and hectic holiday, my husband and I are making it a tradition to get some R&R together in January.  No phones, emails, or internet needed!  Good air, good food, good wine, and hot tubs!  This year we headed out to West Texas and Big Bend and although I am a little embarrassed to say that it was my first time out to Big Bend, but it absolutely wont be my last!

The entire trip seemed to hit upon the theme of time and space and I found my attention drawn consantly to texture and color.  We were always looking out over huge expanses and vistas, or focusing at our feet at the smallest detail.  There was little in between. It was a truly inspiring landscape

Day 1 had us getting out of Austin a little late, but it didnt matter, we were leaving our timetables behind.  We stopped in Sonora on our way out and took the 1 hr and 45 minute tour of the Caverns of Sonora.  They were absolutely breathtaking, and the break right in the middle of our 8 hour drive was just what we needed.  We ended the day in Alpine where we stayed for the first two nights, in a cute little place we found on VRBO {w a hot tub!}.

Day 2 started with coffee at Plaine and window shopping in Alpine.  We then headed to Marfa for lunch at Food Shark, browsing at the amazing Marfa Book Co., a little purchase from Tienda M, some more browsing and exploring, coffee at Frama {Plaine’s sister shop}, a run through the 100 Works in Mill Aluminum at Chinati, and a stop into the Cobra Rock studio.  We then headed out to Ft Davis where we stopped into the very very “interesting” Rattlers & Reptiles Museum on the way up the mountain to the McDonald Douglas Observatory for our Star Party!  We finished the day back in Marfa eating at the bar at Maiya’s {Cochineal was closed} and ended up back in the hot tub.

Day 3 and we started out trip into Big Bend and Terlingua!  We arrived at our ranch cabin for the next three days, met Maggie & Billy the mules living on our property, dropped our bags, and immediately headed into the park.  We caught sunset at Santa Elena Canyon, got our bearings in respect to the park, picked up coffee from Big Bend Coffee Roasters and some organic carrots for the mules, and stopped for dinner at the Starlight Theater in Terlingua Ghostown.  We were delighted that our entertainment for the night was the annual “Word Off” spoken word and story competition.  The entire trip I kept being in awe of how many artists and creative types we continued to come in contact with in the remoteness of West Texas.

Day 4 was filled with much needed rest and relaxation, hiking, and eating at our ranch cabin.  After all that running around we needed a day with nothing to do.

Day 5 we tackled Big Bend!  We started with coffee at the cafe at La Posada Milagro {and a little internet check-in} before heading into the park.  We tackled the breathtaking 4 hour Lost Mine Trail in the Chisos Basin which was absolutely mind blowing!  The amazing changes in vegetation and wildlife due to the elevation all within the middle of the desert was unreal.  After the long hike we headed down towards the Hot Springs at the Rio Grande.  When we made it to the springs we ended up being the only ones enjoying it for sunset!  {Sometimes it pays to travel off season!}

Day 6 we said goodbye to Maggie & Billy and headed home.  We stopped for snacks Marathon and checked out the historic Gage Hotel.  We made a mental note that we must spend a night here on our next trip.  It would be the perfect stopover after roughing it in Big Bend for a few days.  Then it was straight home {with maybe a stop at DQ for a blizard along the way}.  All in all, an 8 hour drive isnt as horrible as you might imagine.

I have to say, the trip was the perfect getaway.  I came home inspired by the desert landscape and ready to start designing!  The new spring collections will be debuting on the website soon, but in the meantime I leave you with some of my favorite images from the trip.  Texture and color dominated the pictures and continues to inspire.  Enjoy!
